Virtual Quilt Show: Sharon Siacci

Sharon Siacci

This fun project is made from a Boo Davis pattern. It was made for the children's ward at Wellington hospital. The perfect recipient was found in an eleven year boy undergoing cancer treatment. I have reliable feedback that says he loves it :)

Virtual Quilt Show: Cathy Miller

Cathy Miller

I've been working on my first series of art quilts - a challenge with two other artists (one a painter, one a potter) for an upcoming gallery show - my first - in February. We are using the theme "refractions" for the challenge, and we are each to come up with 10 pieces. One of the definitions of "refraction" is what happens when something passes through another medium and changes (like light passing through a prism). We decided to each do a piece based on one of the other artist's work, translating it through our own medium. Eileen (the painter) did a lovely canvas of a sunset over Lake Cowichan, just north of us on Vancouver Island. I loved it. I took a Quilt Design 2-day class with Katie Pasquini Masopust earlier this year, and used her idea of subdividing the sections to add interest. I loved doing this, and look forward to the next one I can try another of her excellent suggestions on.

Virtual Quilt Show: Patrise Dowling

Patrise Dowling 1

I made this quilt for my mother for Xmas last year. Butterflies have always been a favourite and red is her favourite colour. She loves this quilt. I hand pieced the butterfly blocks and machine quilted it.
Patrise Dowling, Waterway Warfare

This is a photo of my fish quilt. It is called "Waterway Warfare" and is a protest against exotic fish destroying our waterways. I used fabric, gesso, teabags, stitching and found objects to create this quilt.

Virtual Quilt Show: Kerry Moore

Kerry Moore, Hydrangea

Do you remember some years ago when the beautiful rich hydrangea fabrics were available? It was one of those “can’t cut it “ fabrics and I designed this quilt, Hydrangea, to showcase the fabric and add some movement as well. I adore the gorgeous florals that abound from time to time and have a number of them in progress as well as many waiting their turn to start. I quilted the hydrangea blocks free motion, but hand quilted concentric circles over the blocks with strips. I hope you enjoy the flower show.

Virtual Quilt Show: Kay Dungavell

Kay Dungavell, Peaceful Pathways

Peaceful Pathways, designed by Esther Aliu and made by Kay Dungavell, Charters Towers for her daughter Sari.

Virual Quilt Show: Jane Charlton

Jane Charlton, Rob Peter to Pay Paul

"Rob Peter to Pay Paul"
English pieced, for those of you who haven’t tried it; great to have papers and fabric cut in a “pick up and go bag”. I use a small purse with some pins, needles and thread plus fabric and paper. Then it is just a matter of throwing into your bag and all ready for travel.

Virtual Quilt Show: Frances Cox

Frances Cox, Antique Tile

This quilt was made from blocks collected through the SCQATC Group block swap. The blocks are Antique Tile Blocks. There were 2 groups and we swapped with both groups.

I supplied the yellow and red fabrics, and I also had the green, which is in the border. Not sure whether all the ladies who took part have seen the finished quilt. It was quilted by Kylie Cannon of Beaumaris.

Virtual Quilt Show: Cara Drew

I am relatively new to patchwork and quilting, having only taken up the craft four years ago. I'm totally hooked and am a prolific maker of tops, which take a considerable time to actually turn into quilts. I'm gradually working my way through my extensive family and friends though.

These are two of my favourite quilts.

Cara Drew, Matrix

Matrix was one of the first quilts I made "unassisted" by a tutor/teacher and is the first one I ever quilted myself, in the ditch.

Cara Drew, California Star

The second quilt I call "California Star", because I bought the fabrics while I was on holiday in Monterey, California in 2010. I had it professionally quilted.

Virtual Quilt Show: Jennie Richards

Jennie Richards, Plastered Pinwheels

This quilt was made last year (2012) from leftover half-square triangles, which were pieced in 2009 while my left arm was in plaster after being broken. As the plaster went half-way down my fingers, I was a little limited in what I could sew, but these pieces were joined into pinwheel blocks, which, last year, made it into a quilt. Designed in EQ7, quilted on My Lovely New Bernina (14 years old, but it will be My Lovely New Bernina until the day I die).

For more of Jennie's work, see her blog.

Virtual Quilt Show: Petra McLennan

Petra McLennan, Zesty

Zesty was made for my 14 y.o. granddaughter, who requested an orange and gray quilt .. and "not boxy please". The pattern came from a free motion quilting book by Natalia Bonner. This is only the second quilt I have ever dome any free motion quilting on ( thanks Mariya W for giving me the confidence to tackle this ! )

Virtual Quilt Show: Margaret Attrill

Margaret Attrill

This is one of my favourite quilts and I thought I would share it with you all. I love hand work and this quilt is mostly hand stitched. I was given the pattern by a friend and don’t know who is the owner of it but I really do like it.

I fused the fabric shaped onto vleisofix and then buttonholed it to the back ground fabric. This was the first time I had used corner stone blocks in the sashing so that was a new thing for me to learn.

The quilt is hand quilted and it will be a gift for a friend.

Virtual Quilt Show: Nola Archer

I made this quilt a few years ago but it's still the one that makes me feel good when I look at it.
Nola Archer,  Butterfly Ball
I created a mystery quilt using Snowball and Nine Patch blocks for a group at my workplace and this was my version of the pattern. I felt the Snowball blocks needed something extra to fill them so I added the butterfly applique and then the trailing vine border. It was hand quilted. It's on my mother-in-law's bed now and she loves it too!

Virtual Quilt Show: Sharron Shimbel

Sharron Shimbel, My Decade of Trees
This quilt of mine is an adaption of a Piecemakers' Calendar from 2002. I call it “My Decade of Trees”, as that’s how long it took me to finish it. The original pattern is quite different with the on-point blocks set with crazy quilting on the corners, and surrounding a large medallion block of a tree in all four seasons. Each block also included an animal and, in a couple, there were buildings, which I didn’t like as they seemed out of proportion. I used a lot more silk ribbon and embroidery in the blocks and changed a few small details but the best decision I made was to ask Jacki from Brindabella Quilting to machine quilt it for me; she has done a magnificent job.

Virtual Quilt Show: Tina Collins

Tina Collins

This is a medallion quilt that I made in a 6 month class at Steph's Patchwork at Moruya. The quilt was a design from the teacher (sorry, can only remember her first name, Daiva ???). I travelled from Canberra to Moruya one Saturday a month to attend the class. I used fabrics from Heather Bailey's Pop Garden and Bijoux range. This was a bit of departure colour wise for me, but has started me on a whole new path of using bright colours and making more "modern" quilts. The picture shows the quilt hanging at the Bungendore Quilters exhibition last year, in which I won 1st prize in the Viewers Choice section (my first ever prize).
Hope you like it.

Virtual Quilt Show: Mary Mills

Mary Mills, Garden Fantasy

My version of a Janet Sampson machine embroidery quilt, I call it Garden Fantasy with a Twist. I made one for a charity and liked it so much, I made another for me! It is a large double bed/small queen size quilt and is a very cheerful quilt. I also digitized and quilted the background with free motion quilting. I have several others (wall hangings), which I am also fond of.

Virtual Quilt Show: Cait Gordon

Cait Gordon, True Colours

‘True Colours’, 2.5m square – my original design, made from batiks and Kaffe Fassett fabrics. It took twelve months to make, quilted by hand in random straightish lines with colourful DMC threads.
